Markus Gottschling will speak at the Virtual Ethical Innovation Lecture (VEIL) of the Ethical Innovation Hub of the University of Lübeck on June 4th, 2024.
The Ethical Innovation Hub is an institution of the University of Lübeck dedicated to transdisciplinary research at the interface of technology and the humanities. The core of its work is to constructively incorporate humanities approaches and expertise into the development of new technologies and innovations.
To this end, the Ethical Innovation Hub conducts its own research projects as well as the VEIL, where scientists have the opportunity to present their thoughts and ideas on topics at the interface of the humanities and technology to an interested audience. The lectures take place each semester, digitally and consist of a presentation and a Q&A session in which the audience is actively involved. In the summer semester 2024, AI is the overarching topic of the VEILs.
Markus Gottschling will hold the VEIL on June 4th 2024 on the topic “Persuasive Machines and the Rhetoric of Generative AI”. The event will take place from 13:00–13:45, participation is free of charge after prior registration.
In addition to Markus Gottschling, Vlasta Sikimić (Eindhoven University of Technology) on the topic: “Is AI to be used in grant review” and Aleksandra Vučković (University of Belgrade) with the question: “Can AI Contribute to Fairness in Education?” will be guest speakers this semester.
The growing influence of generative AI on communication requires a nuanced understanding of its impact. While these tools promise to increase efficiency and audience engagement, concerns about authenticity and potential misuse persist. As AI co-creates content, questions of authorship, originality, and ethical boundaries arise. This talk will explore the rhetorical strategies employed by AI, the ethical considerations of language models, and their evolving capacity for understanding and persuasion within the communications landscape.
